Maritime Training Simulations
Description and Responsibilities
MetaSHIP is a UK-certified VR serious game and accident analysis simulation developed at Orka Informatics between 2017 and 2019. I joined the company to establish the development department from scratch, building the team and pipeline. The simulation is currently utilized by global industry leaders like ABS Maritime for professional training.
Advanced Maritime Physics: Implemented realistic hydrodynamics, buoyancy logic, and wave interaction systems to ensure accurate physical behavior for accident reconstruction.
MetaHuman, Motion Capture & LiveLink: Integrated MetaHuman characters for in-game usage, resolving critical engine-specific bugs prevalent in early versions. Managed Xsens motion capture pipelines and LiveLink workflows. Handled Animation Retargeting to adapt mocap data for diverse character models.
Technical Tools & Reporting: Developed internal tools including Spline Tools for environment design and a Quest Manager. Created a Technical Report Tool that logs detailed metrics (user actions, timing, answers) to a web-based database and generates local PDF exports. Developed custom Cheat Manager to prevent cheating and ensure data integrity for certification standards.
Production Pipeline & Workflow: Established the technical pipeline for asset integration. Defined standards for 3D model importing, naming conventions, and folder structures. Implemented Atlas Mapping and Material Instance workflows for optimization. Managed Animation Retargeting, Skeleton setup, and collision presets for static and skeletal meshes.
World Building & Optimization: Created realistic marine environments and detailed vessel interiors. Constructed massive scenes using advanced optimization techniques, utilizing LOD generation, Texture Atlas mapping, and precise Mipmap settings to ensure high performance. Personally handled lighting and post-processing.
UI/UX & Interaction: Developed simulation interfaces and dashboard systems. Developed VR interaction logic for machinery operation and bridge navigation tasks.
Cross-Platform Development: Developed gameplay mechanics for both VR hardware and PC platforms. Handled real-time data integration and API connections.
Leadership & Management: Built and led a multidisciplinary team of 3D Artists, Full-Stack Web Developers, Designers, and Unreal Programmers. Managed the entire project lifecycle while actively contributing to core development.
